Work -- to provide food for God's house

Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins? Each of you busies himself with his own house. -Haggai 1:4ff

Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce, then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. -Proverbs 3:9-10

But you say, 'How shall we return?' Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, 'How have we robbed you?' In tithes and contributions ... bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house ... put me to the test ... if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. -Malachi 3:7ff

"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." - Hosea 4:6

The Bible says:

"Whoever is slack in his work is a brother to him who destroys." - Proverbs 18:9

"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord ..." - Colossians 3:23-24.

Job Information

'There was not a needy person among them ...' -Acts 4:34

InterChurch News Service provides the following job information, job seeker sites as referrals, not necessarily as endorsements of company hiring policies or practices. A job opportunity listing on this site does not necessarily imply an endorsement of InterChurch News Service or it's editorial policies.

We list job opportunities to promote the good news of Jesus Christ to those in need of a job, to provide hope, and (for those who are Christians) to be witnesses in the marketplace as reliable, competitive, hard working employees.

Selected Bible texts to consider in (or at) work:

  1. Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding. -Proverbs 17:27
  2. Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent. -Proverbs 17:28
  3. Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people ... honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor [president, CEO, director, supervisor]. -1 Peter 2:13-16
  4. Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the unjust. For this is a gracious thing, when mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. -1 Peter 2:18ff
  5. Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed, to malign no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing every consideration for all men. -Titus 3:1-2 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
  6. But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law ... -Titus 3:9 NASB
  7. Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. But avoid worldly and empty chatter ... -2 Timothy 2:15-16 NASB
  8. The Lord's bondservant must not be quarrelsome, but kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition ... -2 Timothy 2:24-25 NASB
  9. But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good  to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you ... as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them. -Luke 6:27-31
  10. Do not take to heart all the things that people say, lest you hear your servant cursing you. Your heart knows that many times you yourself have cursed others. -Ecclesiastes 7:21-22
  11. Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion. -Ecclesiastes 3:22 King James Version

XIII:  More Job Information

Here are a just a few examples of God's people in work situations:

 1. Joseph was dumped by his brothers and sold to slave traders, was falsely accused and imprisoned while a slave in Egypt, yet years later exalted to a prime minister position under Pharoah. In each of his job assignments, whether working as a slave, imprisoned, or second in command only to Pharoah, Joseph excelled and was respected for his wisdom and work ethic (Genesis chapters 39-50). 2. Jacob sent his sons to a pagan Egypt to buy grain during a famine (Genesis 42:2). 3. Nehemiah, in exile, worked as a cupbearer to a pagan Babylonian king (Nehemiah 1:11, 2:1). 4. Cornelius of Caesarea, the first Gentile convert to Christianity, was a Roman centurion -- a commander of 100 men (Acts 10).
